The Holdovers writer David Hemingson reveals that the original script started as a pilot episode based on his personal experience at prep school in the 1970s. The film takes place at an all-boys boarding school during Christmas 1970. It centers around a cranky history teacher, Paul (Paul Giamatti), who must supervise a group of students, including the rebellious Angus (Dominic Sessa), who cannot return home for the holidays. Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Gillian Vigman, Tate Donovan, and Carrie Preston. Hemingson explained that The Holdovers script started out as a pilot titled “Stone Haven” inspired by his personal experiences, which would focus on a young boy at prep school and kindling a pseudo-parental relationship with his uncle (via Screenrant).
