Thanks to the success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the whole film franchise based on the SEGA video game has now surpassed $1 billion in total box office receipts worldwide, making it the fourth-highest-grossing video game movie franchise. Its profit per film, though, makes it more successful than two of the top three film franchises based on video games — the Resident Evil franchise (which has 10 movies, grossing an average of $127,953,832 per film) and the Pokémon franchise (which has 24 movies, grossing an average of $63,220,294 per film).
